Your Cross Will Change You
Your Cross Will Change You
Luke 23:35-47 King James Version (KJV)
35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, This Is The King Of The Jews. 39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. 44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written
In Luke chapter number twenty three. We’re going to put in here down around verse number, well… Lord it’s all good. This is where the Lord Jesus has been crucified, for the sins of the world; but greater he’s been crucified for my sin , Amen . Has he ever been crucified for your sin? Amen , and of course he prayed those seven sayings on the cross , and verse number thirty five: “the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying , He saved others; let him save himself , If he be Christ , the chosen of God.” If he had saved himself we’d all be in trouble tonight. Amen. “And the soldiers also mocked him , coming to him and offering him vinegar , and saying , If thou be the king of the Jews , save thyself . And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek.” That was the educational language of the day, “. . . and [of Latin, That was the military language of the day . “. . . And Hebrews,” That was the religious language of the day. ”THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Remember in one other place , I believe it’s the book of John [See John 19:20-22] . They came to him and said Pilate you need to take that down and Pilate said what I’ve written, I’ve written, so Pilate could do what Pilate wanted to do . Amen, now on to verse thirty nine. “And one on of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us . But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Doest not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy Kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. And it was about the sixth hour,” that would be
three [twelve] o’clock ,>“and there was a darkness over all the land . . .” twelve o’clock . . . “over all the earth until the ninth hour.” From twelve o’clock noon til 3 o’clock in the afternoon darkness over, what did it say? All of the earth. And the sun was darkened, notice there was another darkness there, “the sun was darkened and the veil of the temple was rent in the mist and when Jesus had cried with a loud voice he said Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus , he gave up the ghost . Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.”
Father in Jesus name, thank you tonight, Lord for the privilege we have to come out and meet, I ask you now Lord to take the word of God and minister to our hearts and minds and Lord maybe souls gets saved and the saints will get stirred. Lord maybe we all be about thy business before you come. In that hour in Christ’s name I do pray, Amen.
32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
I want to call your attention back to that thief on the cross that was hanging there with the Lord Jesus. You’ll find, also in the book of Mark, Chapter 15 Verse 32 [see Mark 15:32] , that when they first were hanging there on the cross outside of Jerusalem, the two thieves that is, that both of them reviled on the Lord Jesus Christ. Both of them that were hanging there, they reviled against the Lord, and but you find that when it turned, right before it turned dark, right before the darkness came on the scene, and when the one that was the hanging there, the one that cried unto the Lord, the one that said, Lord remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. There was something that happened to that thief and I want to say just with this thought “Your Cross Will Change You.” Amen. The Lord allows me sometimes the preach a message on the second coming of the cross. I’m I’m so thankful that it came to me the first time, Amen. And when I say it came to me, I’m talking about when the Holy Ghost let me see, for the the first time, that the Lord Jesus died for me, I’d had always believed that he had died for the man of the world, but when I realized that he died for me, and rose again, boy it became real. but the second coming of the cross is when you get saved and you start walking and trying your best to live for God. Jesus told his disciples, If your not willing to lay down everything, to crucify the flesh, that’s what the cross is, the cross you crucify your will, and you do the will of God. And the second coming of the cross is you bear that cross on a daily basis, wherever you might be in this walk of life, not just on Wednesday or Sunday, or whatever holy day you might have, but its everyday, and to carry the cross is to deny the will of the flesh. Amen.
And so this thief here hanging on the cross, he wound up with a good testimony, and this is the only man that I find in the Word of God that’s got a deathbed confession. I know that we have the testimony of several in the last few years, and I sure hope and pray they’re real, friend. But this man when he was first hanging on the cross he saw the Lord Jesus, he saw him just as a man, but after he went through some suffering on his own, guess what? Something changed his heart and mind and he finally realized that it was the Lord of Glory that they were crucifying. I want to say first of all, this thief on the cross, He Believed in God . Look in Chapter 23 in Verse 40, bible said in Verse 40 and him talking to the other thief that would not confess the Lord, He said don’t you fear God? Boy I wish America had the fear of God back in her tonight, can I go father and say I wish a lot Christians had the fear of God back in them tonight. And that one thief, one sinner talking to another sinner said don’t you fear God? Amen.
Romans 3:19 KJV
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Notice not only that but He Believed He Was Guilty in Verse 41. We are receiving our just reward. We’re thieves and we got caught, and we must pay the penalty, Amen. Boy I tell you what, I thank God for the night I became guilty before God, Amen. Bible said let every man be a liar, Amen, let God be true and every man liar [See Romans 3:4] , that the world may be guilty before God [See Romans 3:19] . Amen. I’m glad I’ve been guilty before God. You know that you can’t help a man that don’t feel guilty, you can’t talk to someone that don’t believe their wrong.
Boy I tell you what this thief also He Believed in Grace . Look at Verse number 42, he knew he couldn’t do anything about his situation, Bro. Heath. but he said in verse number 42 he said Lord all I want is for you to remember me, Hallelujah, Lord have mercy, just remember me, Lord. somehow in his soul he knew the Lord could do something about his situation. This thief knew he was condemned. This thief realized that Jesus was the Christ. This thief confessed before God. This thief was sure of the Lord’s Kingdom. Believe, now notice this, before the first three hours, he didn’t believe all that, but the last three hours changed his heart. He said Lord remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. He believed who he was, and he believed He was going to get up from the graveyard. Amen. This thief was sure of the Lord’s Kingdom. This thief while on the cross became a changed man. That thief hanging there, because of his own sin, found hope in the Lord, and found hope for his future. Because Jesus said To day thou shalt be with me in Paradise. Amen. Lord have Mercy
This Thief realize that He Broke the Law . He said we’re receiving the reward of our deeds. He knew that he had broken the Civil Law. Can I say this tonight, my friend, that I broke the civil law coming back from Alabama yesterday. Their speed limit said 70 and I had her on 80, Amen, I was wanting to get home Shelia, and I was breaking the law and if I had got pulled over, not only was Sherry trying to convince me of the law, but that State Trooper sure would have convinced me if he would have pulled me over. Can I say tonight, that everybody has broken the Law of God. Amen. The law was given that we might have the knowledge of sin and for by the law was the knowledge of sin, hallelujah. I want to say our Conscience Law. Every one of us tonight, I’m talking about that part of you that knows. that part that separates you from the animal. That part of you that talks to you when your out there by yourself. Remember we was talking about Adam and Eve, how they willfully sinned in the garden and God come to them and said who told you that you were naked? Their own conscience woke up and spoke to them.
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
But he also knew that he had broke Christ’s law. Jesus went around teaching You love your neighbors as yourself. And if you love your neighbor, you won’t steal from them, Amen. But he had stole something that didn’t belong to him. Notice number 2, that after he had broken the laws, he had realized something that he never seen before. In verse number 42, for the first time in his life, after he had broken the law, He Beheld the Lamb of God , Amen. He said Jesus Lord remember me. This man he looked at the Lord Jesus and said hey buddy, this man hath done nothing wrong, he’s not broken any laws. Can I say tonight, what the Word of God said, that in him, that is Jesus Christ, there is no sin. Amen. He made sin for you and me but in him was no sin. 1 Peter Chapter 1 [See 1 Peter 1:19-20] said that he was like a lamb without spot and without blemish, but verily was forordained, before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in these last time for you. For the first time he beheld the Lamb of God. I believe Bro. Kenneth he had heard about it. I mean folks have been hearing about Jesus, Amen. John the Baptist had baptized him, and the disciples were telling people about him. I was reading something this afternoon that just bumfuzzled me. Over in the book of John chapter number 4, that woman at the well, you know, the woman of Samaria. And the Lord sat down on the well, and was waiting on her when she got there. Them disciples had went down to McDonald’s to get some hamburgers on there way back. They saw him talking to her. That woman after she had a talk with the Lord. She went ran back into town and told a whole bunch of men that she had met the Lord. But you know what Bro. Ralph, the whole time them Disciples were down in town, nobody heard about God, they didn’t say nothing about Jesus, what about that? But he beheld the Lamb for the first time. He Beheld him as a Spotless Lamb . He said this man has done nothing amiss. He Beheld Him as a Sacrificial Lamb . He knew that He was dying for somebody else, Amen. He Beheld him as a Substitutionary Lamb . He knew he was dying for him. I’m glad He died for me. Hallelujah I’m glad He’s living for me tonight too, Amen.
He had realized that he had broken the Law. He Beheld the Lamb. I want to say number 3, out of verse number 42 not only that but He Believed in the Lord . Now I want to say tonight for some folks, its going to take being hung on a cross. Its going to take the pig pen. Its going to take the ship wreck. It might even take being blinded on the Damascus Road. But one of these days my friend everybody is going to believe in the Lord; but for most people its going to be too late. Amen. Bible said in Philippians chapter number 2 there’s coming a day when every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess, that He is the Lord to the glory of God the Father. Hallelujah. I’m glad I bowed on the this side of eternity and confessed Him as Lord and Saviour. How about you, Amen?
He Believed He was a Ruler tonight. He said Lord, when thou comest into thy Kingdom. He Believed He Was Going to Reign one day. And He Believed in the Resurrection . He Believed he was going to get up. This thief could possibly be the first person ever to believe in the intercessory priesthood of Jesus Christ, Lord have mercy, as our great high priest. That’s right, I mean think about it, I’ve heard preachers say, Lord Jesus when he died on the cross come walking into Paradise carrying one thief in his arms, well that might be good and all, but that’s not bible, friend. Because Jesus died before the thief did. Cause they come back and broke his legs and I’ll get to that in a minute. This thief… Number 4 The Breaking of His Legs , look in John chapter number 19, just go over a few pages for a few minutes, John chapter number 19 I want you to look down around verse 31 for a minute. In John 19 verse 31 the bible said: “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs.”
You know the rest of the story friend. The breaking of his legs, verse number 31. After the breaking of the legs, the body would soon suffocate from lack of air. I mean, your hands, I used to, I was thinking about this sitting out in the swing there, during this beautiful day today. If your hands is stretched out and the bible said in the book of psalms that his bones, his joints were out. His hands being stretched out on the cross, and His feet nailed to the bottom of that cross. How in the world can you pull yourself up with your hands. You can’t. You push yourself up with your legs. They said it took great effort just to get a breath of air if you was being crucified. But the Lord in His great suffering, when that thief sent a request to him, the Lord muscled up, pulled up enough air to say “to day thou shalt be with me in paradise.” Boy, if you want to talk to him, he’s there to talk to, Amen. He ain’t ever too busy to talk to you. When our legs get broken my friend then we’re soon going out of here. What are you saying Bro. Robert? Well, I had this saying for a while, I said just break my legs and send me home. Sometimes in the midst of our sorrows, our pains, we just cry out, I mean we’re tired of the suffering, we’re tired of the sorrows, we’re tired of the death. Sometimes we just cry out, Lord why don’t you just take me on out of here. Jesus told that theif that day, This day your going to be with me in paradise. And that thief had that hope Sis. Martha. And when they came to him, I know it had to hurt, I know it had to. But he knew that when his legs got broke, that he was soon to be with the Lord in glory. Hallelujah, no matter the suffering we may endure, my friend, weeping may endure for a night, but joy is coming in the morning. Hallejuah. This thief realized that heaven was his that day. Lord have mercy.
January the 12th 1985 on a Saturday Night after the confession of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ from my lips, I went home that night, for the first time in my life knowing that heaven was mine. He realized that the hurting would soon be done away by the breaking of the legs, that would put him on out of here he’d suffer and go on. And his hope, his hope, would deliver him. Look at John 19, I read in verse 31, that they might take, then came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other, brother verse 34 “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith” or immediately, “came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.” Can you see that thief there, that my friend, he knew, that when Jesus died, he’d already believed Bro. Heath. And went that soldier came up there, and stuck that spear in, there came the blood out, and the water out. The blood came first, and then the water came out. Hallelujah tonight, I’ve got a hope my friend, that’s going to deliver me, and its in the blood of Jesus Christ, and the water of the Word of God. Hallelujah, he knew it wouldn’t be long til he saw his Saviour again, and I can say with authority tonight, that its not going to be long til we see our Saviour. That thief he couldn’t do anything. He couldn’t be baptized. He couldn’t do a ritual. The only thing he could do was believe, and confess, and look for that hope that was coming, Amen. Yeah, he was going to have to suffer, we’re all going to suffer, but our hope, we’ve got a hope that will deliver us, Amen. He’s coming back. Are you ready? Are you truly, I look around and I think everybody is saved. But the testimony of that thief, I mean his cross changed him. Your cross will change you when you start carrying it, Amen.
